Sparta Board Adopts Two New Protections for Highways

Town Board · Meeting of February 10, 2026

NY SPARTA — Sparta Town Board adopts truck weight restrictions on seven specific roads. The board unanimously adopted Local Law 2-2026, restricting commercial vehicles and trucks exceeding five to 10 tons on North Dansville, Harter, Deiter, Carney, Logan, Barber, and Stong Hill roads; the board determined these roads' steep grades make them unsuitable for heavy traffic. Violators face fines up to $500 for the first offense and $1,000 thereafter.

Simultaneously, the board adopted Local Law 1-2026, requiring written notice to the Town Clerk or Highway Superintendent before the town can be sued over highway defects or related injuries, a measure recommended by the town's insurer, New York Municipal Insurance Reciprocal.
